Pompeii to the medieval frescoes of Italy, interiors and exteriors have been decorated with paint.
Faux finishes, and other paint techniques, have been utilized to distress,
age and transform surfaces and objects, and to simulate materials such as stone,
marble, wood and gold. The 20th century has witnessed a resurgence of enthusiasm
for these ancient styles as well as the development of many modern techniques in
the art of faux finishing.
